Shalom, allow me to share with your heart this vital sermon for our life. In Joshua 22:5 it is written ‘Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
What is it to love God? – It is very important to have a clear understanding of what does it mean by loving the Lord your God? Through my inductive bible study I have realized that loving God means and demands the following;
Keeping God’s commandments – in John 14:15, 23-24 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments… If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him’. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me’.
Therefore it is obvious that if one is not keeping his word or observing his commandments that that person does not love God. That is to say loving God demands a person to often observe and obey the instructions of his word.
Please check your life, if you are not attending church services neither reading your bible, how can you have an understanding of your masters will? How can you know his laws and guidelines to comply to? Through this message I’m warning you to have time for your God, remember we are all passing in this world and time to settle accounts is at hand.
Loving one another including your enemies – in John 13:34-35 the bible says ‘A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another’ and in John 15:12 it is also written ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you’.
You see, we need to understand that loving one another is a command and therefore since God is love, therefore loving one another is fulfilling of the law and thus loving God. This is because ‘No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen’ (1 John 4:12,20).
This truth is also the essence behind loving our enemies as it is also written ‘But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?’ (Mathew 5:44,46). Therefore a true disciple of Jesus will not only develop and maintains the love of the believers but also love his enemies and pray for them.
Loving God with all your heart, soul, mind and might – in Deuteronomy 6:5 it is written ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might’. Brothers and sisters, loving God demands our whole being to be for him, that is there should nothing to hinder you from loving God and He, God, should be your number one in every area of your life.
Don’t you remember what Delilah asked Samson? She said “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? … (Judges 16:15). That is why, God, demands you to love him with all your heart, soul, might and mind.
Let me ask you what is in control of your heart? Is it the things of world or things of God? Who is having your heart, is it Jesus or Satan, Light or Darkness? Hope you know the truth of your own, I urge you, if Jesus is not the master your heart, seek him and allow him to be your Lord before it is too late.
Abandoning things of the world for Jesus – In Philippians 3:7-8 it is written ‘But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ’.
There are times loving God demands you to abandon some of your friends, hobbies, behavior, job, position, properties, avoid going some places, avoid doing some things etc because of Christ. Yes, you do that, so as to have time for the one you love and let him alone to have a total control of your heart and life.
If you real mean to love Jesus you must abandon the things of this world by not loving the world and conforming to the pattern of this world. This is because within the things of this world there are spirits that hinders the love of the Father to a person as it is written ‘Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him’ (1 John 2:15).
Brethren, loving God is a decision that demands one to do away anything that will hinder him to love and serve his God. Don’t worry about the challenges you are going through, they are there to help you love God the more, for it is written ‘…For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul’ (Deuteronomy 13:3).
This means God knows what we are going through in terms of finance, marital life, ministry, career, family, business etc but through it all, He is calling us to love and serve him with all our heart and soul.
Glory and Honor to you Jesus, you deserve my Lord.
